Welcome to a special section of the webfluid website dedicated to my Phase 1 1996 306 gti6.
I have currently owned my car since 2000 and enjoy driving it at weekends during the summer months , taking it to various peugeot orientated shows around the country. It is stored in a garage in darkest Essex for 9 months of the year and does not get taken out when the weather is bad. Over the 9 years i have owned it i have covered around 45,000 miles and exchanged the engine a few years back to a ready built 2.1 Engine with a few little trick bits that i have collected over the years from other gti6 rally cars and touring cars.
As you can see the engine is in imaculate condition and has currently done around 7,000 miles since it were changed.
The whole car has always been clean car as the previous owner did a fine job of keeping it that way also. It is serviced by trusted mechanics once or twice a year and parts are replaced as they wear out using genuine Peugeot parts/ uprated motorsport parts only. I have recently changed the clutch, crank pulley , water pump , cam belt, clutch cable, tensioner and had the ecu remapped.
The exhaust has been upgraded to a full stainless custom built Blue flame gti6 exhaust. Keeping with the original design of an oval tail pipe that sits low on the back box enabling the back box to sit higher underneath the car. It looks the best i have seen on the market and sounds just about right when combined with the decat pipe. I run it all the time with a decat pipe as it is not my daily drive. If it were my i think i would become tired of the decat as it is quite noisy on long runs. I am not actually sure the decat makes much difference performance wise , it may make the car a little more tourqey (is that a word ?)low down.
After playing with several air intake systems i have settled for a K & N 57i kit as this sits ok in the engine bay and doesn't have loads of ducting laying around under the bonnet. I did try this induction kit inside the standard air can but this has a detrimental effect on the way the power comes in low down. It also doesn't make the great BWAAAAAARP that the 57i kit is known for. Taking the lid off the standard air can helps but given the weather in this country the thought of driving through a puddle and sucking up water into the engine makes me keep the lid on !!
I have recently upgraded the brakes and brake lines to EBC dimpled and grooved discs and Green stuff pads all round combined with Goodridge Braided stainless hoses. The stopping power has been greatly improved and they do not affect the ABS system, ( but personally wouldn't recommend EBC discs as they corrode quicker than any metal known to man!!!, i have also changed the fluid to 5.1 racing fluid. I do always find the ABS system does make the car feel very flimsy when the car is driven hard and the ABS kicks in and was quite a shock when it first happened.
You can also see from the pictures that it is a very standard looking car in appearance. The wheels have been refurbished and the tyres kept as 195/55 Pirelli P6000. Mainly due to the concourse competitions it is entered for, Not the best tyres by a long shot but overall they last longer than most softer compounds and considerably longer than the favored Good Year F1's of the present times. I find that because the car can go very fast round twisty roads the edges of the F1's seem to suffer and do not last very long.
The wishbone bushes and 3 engine mounts have been changed since i have owned the car as these seem to perish in time They have all been upgraded to the peugeot motorsport varieties and the bottom mount to a power flex one as this seems to stop dashboard vibration that is caused by the motor sport bottom mount. Combined with the recently upgraded Bilstein Sprintline kit and Eibach Springs the whole car feels rock solid and sits 30mm lower than standard,
As mentioned in In the last few weeks of September 2006 i found a ready built engine that was even cleaner than the current one i had fitted. The temptation proved too much and this unit was purchased and was fitted in the first week of October and the old engine put up for sale. Complete madness to a few of my close friends , but i did not listen and i am now the proud owner of a 2.1 litre gti6 with the following spec on the engine:
2.1 16v 306 GTi-6 long stroke engine model :XU10 J4RS

October 14th 2006 the car was collected from Anthony Davidson who resides in Carlisle. I do not think i could have found an engine or mechanic any further away from gloomy Essex but i have to take my hat of to the guy he fitted the engine in record time and i couldn't of wished for a more capable person to fit this beast into my gti6.
Initially it ran like a pig! but 150 miles down the M6 new super unleaded fuel was added and some injector cleaner and within 5 minutes the car and engine were running properly and almost instantly the power increase was felt. Trying my hardest i drove it back at running in revs and set about the next part of the project, Now having a shiney engine and pristine engine bay requires a lot of effort and getting the rest of the car up to the same spec as the engine takes money and time so over the years i do not think there is a part of my car that hasn't been breathed on at some point. In the Autumn of 2008 i removed the rear beam , repainted the floor and repainted the beam and upgraded the rear beam mounts to motor sport varieties. At the same time renewing brake hoses , handbrake cables , rear calipers and new 5.1 fluid. Every nut or bolt has been changed to a stainless variety or cleaned, chromed or powder coated . The rear end of the car now looks as good as the front
The interior in This P1 306 gti6 is by far the best they made for this car although it has a tendency to wear out on the drivers side bolster this example has an almost new interior that i managed to salvage from another 1996 phase 1 and get fitted in the summer of 2006 . I had the original seats bolsters renewed but after 5 years of daily use they wore out too. As you can see this is now been repaired also.
I had a major electrical job done in 2006 , The door looms on the early gti6 have a tendency to perish and break causing all sorts of alarm and window problems. these were replaced at a cost of £300.00 and it has cured all my electrical problems. The side light warning buzzer even sounds now when side lights left on . This is the first time this has worked since i have had the car. And all the interior lights work. The alarm siren was replaced and now that works properly as these take in water in time and stop working also.
This is a very common fault with the car and is quite easy to fit. If you remove the under tray protection you have to expect electrical problems in the long run as there are sensitive electrical parts in the wheel arches of the car and the spray from the road knackers everything under there. Alarm, Horn , fog lights, engine sensors. The under tray is there for a reason so if you do not have one get it replaced . It keeps your engine clean also.
update 01/01/2009
After leaving this web page alone for a good few years in 2009 i still have the car and i am still keeping it clean and entering it into various concourse competitions during the summer months, and in 2008 it managed to win best standard concourse at the pinnacle of French car shows Pugfest 08. It was also entered into the French Car Show top 25 cars in the country but this is more of a 'custom car show ' and not really for the concourse enthusiasts.
You will be pleased to know that i will not be sticking any stupid fiberglass panels onto this car or filling it with mind numbing stereo systems, it will remain a standard looking car with a motor sport heart .I have a list of jobs to do on it in 2009/2010 which include re spraying the front end and fitting a brand new front bumper and rebuilding the head.
2008 has been and gone and in the new year i set about having a minor oil consumption problem fixed, starting with the head. After a strip and rebuild of the head and no reasons found for the oil consumption it was decided to strip the bottom end only to find a scored bore and two pairs of piston rings lining up on pistons 3 & 4 mmmmmmm that would explain it.
The work was carried out by Gti 6 specialist Carl at CG cars leicester. There isn't a thing he doesn't know about these cars and one of very few people in the country that make a living from repairing them. Re-Honing the bores and fitting new rings the engine was rebuilt and i am at present taking it easy for a few thousand miles to bed them in. New motor sport drop links were added to tighten everything up on the front suspension and heat wrap added to the manifold. Still haven't made my mind up with the drop links as it has made everything buzz and rattle on the font suspension. They feel smooth as silk on flat roads but as we don't have many flat roads i may well remove them in time.
There is a lot of cleaning and polishing to be done before the show season starts and at this point in time the only shows i will be attending so far in 2009 are the french car show at Rockingham (psooc stand) and pugfest 09 at prescott hill in the concourse area.
update 01/01/2010
Well after failing to arrive at Pugfest 2009 in the GTI6, i decided to sell the car as i was running out of money fast. It has gone to a good home and i will miss it dearly. It has taught me a lot about cars and i would be more than comfortable looking at any car now with the experience gained on this vehicle.
I had many good times in it over the nine years of ownership and i dont think i will get as attached to another car as i did with this one. Even though it has been gone sonce July 2009, i still havent got used to it not being there on the drive way . As the last oil stains on the drive fade away i made a short video of various pictures and videos taken over the years of ownership.
keep coming back for regular updates , and thanks for looking.
